Mobitel 4G - 96Mbps Download Speed

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel announced today(06/05/2011) that it has carried out a successful trial of LTE (Long Term Evolution) Technology achieving speeds of up to 96 Mbps. At this LTE trial Mobitel has broken the speed barrier even further to demonstrate broadband speeds of up to 96Mbps in downlink and 49Mbps in uplink using LTE technology.
The Director General of Telecommunications(TRCSL) Mr.Anusha Palpita witnesses Mobitel demonstrating 4G(LTE) technology exceeding 96Mbps data download speed and 49Mbps in upload speed 1st in south Asia at Mobitel flagship center.

Reason to this speed in LTE
The prime factor behind thise super-fast speeds demonstrated in LTE technology when compared to existing and most advanced 3G technologies is that the spectral efficiency is 4 to 5 times greater in LTE than in the most advanced 3G technologies. The use of OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) carrier modulation in LTE allows easy upward scalability for higher bandwidth requirements, coupled with MIMO technology, which effectively uses multiple antennae in both the Terminal Device (Data dongle, Tablet PC/Smart Phone etc.) and radio network to transmit and receive multiple streams of information within the same spectrum. The demonstration was carried out in the 2.6GHz frequency range, and initiatives are under way to explore operations at other spectrum bands for commercial deployment.

Prince William And Kate Middleton's Royal Wedding Schedule

Click here to seePrince William and Kate's Royal Wedding Invitation

As the royal wedding day, now just two weeks away, creeps closer, more details on how the events of the day will take place are coming into focus. The following wedding day timings were confirmed by the Palace on Friday.

Beginning at 8:15 a.m., London time (3:15 a.m. in the Eastern United States), general guests will start showing up at Westminster Abbey. Arrivals are expected to take approximately an hour and a half, as guests will come by foot and car, and then enter the church through the Great North Door. But don't expect to see any photographs once they get inside; guests have been told cellphones and cameras are not allowed in the Abbey.

Guaranteed to make it to the church on time, Groom Prince William and his Best Man, Prince Harry, will depart Clarence House at 10:10 a.m. Their drive to the Abbey will only take five minutes. Members of foreign royal families will arrive at the church at 10:20 a.m.

Also at 10:20 a.m., Mother of the Bride, Carole Middleton, and James Middleton, brother of the bride, will depart the Goring Hotel. The Palace announced that Catherine Middleton, and members of her family, would be staying at the Goring. The bride, along with her sister and mother will be staying in one of the hotel's premiere suites. It will take seven minutes for Carole and James to travel from the hotel to Westminster Abbey.

At 10:40 a.m., the members of the royal family will begin to pour in. Uncle to the Groom, Prince Andrew, and his daughters Beatrice and Eugenie; Aunt to the groom, Princess Anne, and her husband; and Aunt and Uncle to the Groom the Earl and Countess of Wessex will all enter the front of the church through the Great West door.

Prince Charles and William's stepmother, Camilla, arrive at 10:42 a.m. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip are the last guests to arrive at Westminster Abbey, at 10:45 a.m.

All of Kate's bridesmaids and William's pageboys will gather at the Goring Hotel to depart at 10:48 a.m. The wedding party will arrive at the church five minutes before the ceremony is to begin.

Tick-Tock of Will and Kate's Wedding Day
At 10:51 a.m., Catherine Middleton, accompanied by her father, will depart the Goring Hotel in a Rolls Royce and make her way to Westminster Abbey. Once she arrives at the church, details about her wedding dress will finally be revealed. A press release, including the wedding dress designer's name and sketches and photographs of the dress, will not be sent out until then.

The ceremony, which will start at 11 a.m., is to last just over an hour and will include vows and a sermon delivered by the Bishop of London, private clergyman to the queen. The bells of Westminster Abbey will ring as Prince William and his new wife depart the church.

At 12:15 p.m., the Prince and the new Princess Catherine will go from the church to Buckingham Palace.

The carriage carrying the bride and groom will be followed by the Queen's carriage and members of the Household Cavalry. Two of the horses taking part in the ceremony are named after William and Catherine. The procession will pass by some of London's most well-known landmarks, including the Queen Victoria monument, The Mall, and the Houses of Parliament.

Once the royal couple arrives at Buckingham Palace at 12:30 p.m., they will pose for their official wedding photos. But those private moments between Will, Kate, their families and their bridal party will remain private. The palace staff says they "hope" to release some photographs the following morning.

At 1:25 p.m., the married couple will reappear on the balcony at Buckingham Palace with the Queen and their families for 10 minutes. We can only hope they will follow the example of William's parents and mark the occasion with a public kiss. The Royal Air Force, where Prince William serves as a search-and-rescue pilot, will perform a flyover at 1:30 p.m.

Next, Prince William and Kate will head inside Buckingham Palace to the afternoon reception hosted by the Queen. After that, husband and wife will drive to St. James Palace for some down time.

The 7 p.m. evening party is expected to be much more fun, relaxed, and most important, private. No pictures from the event are expected to be released. Speeches, including the one given by the Best Man, Prince Harry, will be delivered at this reception. This is the one moment of Prince William and Kate's day that is not planned to the second. The palace says the party will "finish when it finishes."

Giant Virus Eating Virus Discovered in Antarctica Lake

A virus, dubbed "Organic Lake Virophage" or OLV, was discovered in Organic Lake, a 6,000-year-old body of saltwater in eastern Antarctica. Researchers found its genome hidden in sequences of local Phycodnaviruses -- giant viruses that basically live in the lake and attack algae. Evidence suggests these two viruses have been swapping genes and co-evolving. Scientists have concluded that the OLV depends on the Phycodnaviruses for survival. The scientists also believe there may be other virus-eating viruses lurking in the depths.
The OLV actually support the ecosystem by making sure there's enough algae for other bacteria to eat. In 2008, the first virophage, Sputnick, was discovered. Scientists who have been looking for another large-scale discovery to confirm their findings, have found it. The discovery hold the clue to understanding and defeating the viruses that attack our own immune systems.

No More Facebook For Sri Lankan Kids

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) today said telecommunication service providers have been requested to encourage parents to prevent underage children from viewing social networking sites on the internet at home.

TRC Director General, Anusha Palpita said blocking access to a website would not be effective because underage children would find other ways of accessing the prohibited sites.

"There is not much we can do to restrict children from using social networking sites. Therefore we have appealed to parents through the service providers to control or prevent the use of undesirable sites by using suitable computer software," Mr. Palpita said.

He said the TRC received complaints from several parents, the police or the Child Protection Authority on the use of social networking sites by children.

"The TRC will block a website if it receives a court order to do so. We have already blocked more than 1,000 such websites on Court directives," he said.

Meanwhile Facebook, the world's largest social networking site recently reported that daily it blocks more than 20,000 children below the age of 13 from using the site.

V8 Land-Cruiser In Saudi Falls Down A 60m Well

You'd think that they'd at least put up a flag to let people know there's a 100 mt hole there. This happened in Saudi a few days ago. In areas where there is fresh water under ground the locals dig wells and support the sides with concrete and stones to keep the sand from falling back in to the well. Some of these are up to 100 meters deep. This particular one was 60 meters deep and 4 meters wide, located outside the small town of Ryad in the center of Saudi. The guys went out in the desert for a bit of 4X4 fun on a Thursday when one of them drove in to the well and dropped 60 meters to the bottom with his V8 Cruiser. Rescue workers retrieved the car and the driver had a mild concussion from hitting his head against the wind screen. Hard to believe he is alive.

Ex-Israeli President Jailed For Rape

Moshe Katsav, Israel's former president, has been sentenced to seven years in jail for rape, Israeli media reported.

The judges also handed the former leader a two-year suspended sentence and ordered him to pay a fine of 100,000 shekels ($28,000).

The sentence was approved by two of the three judges at Tel Aviv district court on Tuesday, which was presided over by Judge George Kara.

Katsav was convicted in December of rape, sexual harassment, indecent acts and obstruction of justice following a four-year scandal that shocked the Jewish state.

He had denied charges he twice raped an aide when he was a cabinet minister in the late 1990s, and molested or sexually harassed two other women who worked for him during his 2000-2007 term as president.

As Katsav arrived at the court, hundreds of journalists packed around the entrance to catch a glimpse of the disgraced president.

The prosecution had called for a lengthy jail term, highlighting the serious nature of the crimes, the damage inflicted on the victims and the shame he brought on the presidential office.

However, his lawyers asked that he be spared prison time, and urged the three judges to take into account the media campaign against him, his public humiliation and inability to rehabilitate his reputation with "the mark of Cain forever etched on his forehead."

The maximum sentence for rape is 16 years behind bars.
